Course Description

 

The Secondary V English program is designed to prepare the student for the imminent challenges of CEGEP English courses by improving their communication skills in reading, listening, speaking and writing.

 

Course Objectives

 

  1. To develop an understanding of the relationship between literature and society

  2. To enrich communication skills

  3. To develop an awareness of perspective, voice and form in communication

  4. To prepare students for thinking and writing at a post-secondary level

  5. To produce and understand media texts

 

 

Course Content and Competencies

 

Writing

 

Students will read and respond to literature by understanding the various ways in which the text reflects the human experience. A variety of writing styles will be explored including the contemporary article, some creative writing techniques and a review of the essay. Research paper and MLA style will also be taught.

 

 

 

Reading

 

Students will review elements of drama in Shakespeare. Texts will include one work by William Shakespeare. The novel, the short story and the poem will be our mainstay.

 

Oral

 

Students will deliver a formal speech for participation in the Q.A.I.S. Senior Public Speaking Competition. Other forms of oral expression will be explored as well. The students will learn how to use their oral communicating skills as an important learning tool.

Students will be informed of specific evaluation plans, tasks, weight and frequency in class. The mark on the school report card represents terms 3 and 4 only. Final marks and credits for the course will appear exclusively on the Ministry of Education Relevé des apprentissages (Statement of Marks). The Relevé /Statement is mailed directly to the home mid-July by the Ministry of Education.

 

Extra-help and teacher availability

 

If students are having difficulties with the course material, it is important that they seek help immediately. Extra help will be provided by appointment with the teacher. Students must assume responsibility for attending extra help. Digital resources are also available on respective course wikis.
